My brother called me a yuppie when I showed him my new (used) Golf. I was slightly offended at first, "I'm not a yuppie"....and then my boyfriend chimed in: "Yes, you are!"....and I began to ponder the thought.....
I am a yuppie. But, a new categorization has come to town: Yupster.
You see, people on the streets wearing cool clothing and listening to "indie" rock bands have recently (or not so recently) been labeled as "hipsters". They are hip, I guess, but not like Hollywood actress hip. No, hip in a much cooler, indie rock way. Specific haircuts, big sunglasses, tight jeans, etc. You see them at shows all throughout the city (and they tend to congregate in the Mission district) - you see them at the cool thrift shops sifting through the masses of clothing. They often ride road bikes and carry messenger bags; one pant leg perhaps is pegged up. You'll catch them working at independent coffee shops, record stores, clothing stores (definitely at the Paul Frank store on Sutter...), or playing in a band.
And then there were yuppies - young urban professionalites with new jobs, new cars, nicer clothing, and cute apartments in big cities (try - san francisco). They may or may not have been associated with the greek lifestyles in their respective colleges. They may or may not hang out at the beer pong bars in the Marina....
But yuppie classification just isn't cool. And hipster, well, sort of is (to me, at least), although people may loathe the term (which I did at first).
And then the merging of the words came together and I now know which group to identify with - the yupster. It's a nice blend of the two ideals, mindsets, fashion, hobbies, etc.
So when I was called a yuppie by my older brother I corrected him and said "No, I'm a yupster." I'm pretty sure my brother had no idea what I was talking about. He lives in Morro Bay, surfs everyday, and works in a small touristy restaurant overlooking the Morro rock and power plant. I'm not sure what classification he fits into - he defies categories, lives his life happily and without (much) worry, and doesn't involve himself with petty identifications of the urban sort.
But that's what blogs are for, right? Random ranting....
And maybe someone could clear up the genre of music once known as emo. I'm from the East coast....where the word had true meaning(at least 5 years ago it did), was a lifestyle (of the hipster sort), made sense. And you come out to the west coast and the classification just goes haywire.
